

Shiva is 'shakti' or power, Shiva is the destroyer, the most powerful god of the Hindu pantheon and one of the godheads in the Hindu Trinity. He is one of the five primary forms of God in the Smarta tradition, and "the Destroyer" or "the Transformer" among the Trimurti, the Hindu Trinity of the primary aspects of the divine. He is the supreme god within Shaivism, one of the three most influential denominations in contemporary Hinduism. Shiva (The Auspicious One), also known as Mahadeva ("Great God"), is one of the main deities of Hinduism. On the occasion of Maha Shivaratri, we sing the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra to Lord Shiva to give us strength to overcome fear of the unknown in our lives.

May he lead us to immortality, just as the cucumber is released from its bondage (the vine to which it is. May he liberate us from (the eternal cycle of birth and) death.
